Ecuador has complained about the noise from Mexican fans outside their hotel ahead of their 2026 World Cup last-16 match.
Ecuador's national team has lodged a complaint with World Cup organizers regarding noise from Mexican fans outside their hotel before their last-16 match against hosts Mexico. Local media reported that about 1,000 Mexican supporters performed noisy serenades in Mexico City on Monday. The match will take place on Wednesday (02:00 BST) at Mexico City Stadium. Supporters used sound equipment, pots and buckets to sing the Mexican folk song "Cielito Lindo" before police chased them away from the site.
"This action is a far cry from the principles of fair play, equality and unity that a football World Cup should represent," read a statement from Ecuador's football federation. They added that Ecuador would "always respond on the field."
Mexico have won all three of their matches at the Mexico City Stadium, while Ecuador's surprise win over Germany has secured their place in the knockout phase. "We believe that this unsportsmanlike act will not tarnish the celebration of football that unites two brotherly countries," the statement added. England, who play DR Congo on Wednesday (17:00 BST), will meet Mexico in Mexico City if both teams win their last-16 ties. FIFA has been contacted for comment.
