Marcelo Bielsa's adventure as Uruguay coach seems to have reached its end. After the poor results experienced by Celeste in the group phase of the 2026 World Cup, the Argentinian coach is reportedly ready to submit his resignation, ending an experience that was far from expectations.
According to a report from Argentinian television station TyC Sports, the 70-year-old coach had conveyed his feelings to the players in the dressing room after the 1-0 defeat to Spain, which determined their elimination from the tournament. During the meeting, Bielsa made a very strong statement: "I leave nothing for Uruguayan football," adding with a bitter reflection on relations with the team: "I leave sad because you left me alone."
Additionally, Bielsa has also reportedly held a press conference at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo, scheduled to take place on Tuesday, where he will officially announce his separation from the national team.
Uruguay ended Group H in third place, behind Spain and Cabo Verde, without managing to grab a spot among the third best teams. The South American team collected just two points from three matches, with draws against Saudi Arabia and Cabo Verde before losing to Spain on the final day. This result is clearly inadequate for a team that was hoping for a much more ambitious journey and is now preparing to open a new chapter after Bielsa's almost certain exit.
