Lionel Messi has scored his 19th World Cup goal, becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches when Argentina took on Jordan in their final group match on Saturday night. Messi scored with a free kick after being fouled just outside the penalty box in the 80th minute. His low shot, which glided over the grass, managed to separate two Jordanian defenders and into the left corner of the goal.

This was Messi's 72nd career goal from a free kick and his 12th for Argentina. Currently, Messi has amassed 123 international goals โ second all-time behind Cristiano Ronaldo's 145 goals โ in 202 appearances. The 39-year-old was previously one of three players to score in six consecutive World Cup matches, alongside French striker Just Fontaine and Brazilian legend Jairzinho.
Messi did not start the match because Argentina had been confirmed as the winner of Group J and Jordan had been eliminated from the knockout stage. He came on for Lautaro Martinez in the 60th minute, who had previously scored with a penalty kick in the first half.
