Ronald Koeman announced his resignation as coach of the Dutch national team after losing to Morocco in the 2026 World Cup. He expressed his disappointment and thanks to his family and players.
The 2026 World Cup will again bring about significant changes in the coaching chair. Ronald Koeman, coach of the Dutch national team, officially resigned after his team was eliminated in the round of 16 by Morocco on penalties (1-1, 3-2). Koeman announced this decision on the same day, after the disappointing results.
At the age of 63, Koeman ended his second period of coaching at the 'Oranje' team. He previously served as coach between February 2018 and August 2020 before becoming FC Barcelona coach. After being fired by Joan Laporta in October 2021, Koeman returned to lead the Dutch national team starting January 2023, the team he managed when they won the Euro 1988 title as a player.
Through a statement on Instagram, Koeman said, "I feel hurt because my tenure with the Dutch national team ended like this. We all dreamed of having a World Cup that would create history. Unfortunately, it didn't come true. No one is more disappointed than me. As a coach, I feel that responsibility. I have always felt it and I will continue to feel it."

Even though his team is not considered the favorite, Koeman is targeting at least reaching the semifinals at the 2026 World Cup. He also stated the personal reasons that prompted his decision to withdraw. "Football is my life, but health is priceless. When someone you love with all your heart is fighting a serious illness, your perspective changes. My wife, Bartina, despite being sick, always supported and encouraged me to complete my duties as national coach. That shows extraordinary strength. I am very grateful for that, more than I can express in words."
Koeman also expressed his gratitude to everyone who had worked with him. "I would like to thank all the players I have had the honor to work with. Their dedication, character and trust motivate me every day. Thank you also to the technical staff, the KNVB (Federation), all the employees who work behind the scenes, and the clubs where I have had the opportunity to coach. But most importantly, thank the fans. For their support, especially in difficult times. It is a great honor to represent the Netherlands as national coach."
In his first period in the coaching chair, Koeman led his team to become runners-up in the 2019 Nations League, losing to Portugal 0-1 in the final which took place in Porto. After replacing Louis van Gaal after the Qatar 2022 World Cup, he managed to lead the Netherlands to the semifinals of Euro 2024 before losing to England with a score of 1-2.
