Jarell Quansah Banned from Two Matches After Red Card

The England national team will be missing one of their key defenders, Jarell Quansah, in the quarter-final and semi-final matches of the 2026 World Cup, should they manage to progress further. Quansah received a straight red card against Mexico, and on Thursday it was announced that his ban had been increased to two games instead of the standard one. Thus, Quansah will miss the quarter-final match against Norway as well as the possible semifinal against the winner between Argentina and Switzerland. Quansah's tackle on Mexican left-back Jesus Gallardo was not sanctioned on the pitch, but he was sent off after a VAR review. "I've called it live when I'm on the job," said FOX rules analyst Mark Clattenburg, "and I've watched the replay over and over again, and the challenge happened at high speed. ... Yes, he did touch the ball, but his foot went over the ball and hit the opponent's leg. I never doubted because not many people can defend that it wasn't a red card." ![Image](https://a57.foxsports.com/statics.foxsports.com/www.foxsports.com/content/uploads/2026/07/1408/814/jarell-quansah.jpg?ve=1&tl=1) Fellow FOX analyst Dr. Joe Machnik, also agreed, saying, "What I believe they saw in the Englishman's offense was excessive force in two-footed lunges towards the opponent. Then, when perhaps as a result of being on the ground, he actually lifted his leg with the studs exposed higher towards the opponent's leg. So, I believe they felt that one match was not enough." Clattenburg explained further regarding the decision to increase the ban to two matches. "If you hurt someone with a challenge that can stop the player from playing the rest of the tournament because of that challenge, then it has to be more than one game," Clattenburg said. "And I believe that this challenge is clearly more than a normal situation, and a second ban for matches is the right decision." Jarell Quansah's ban further frustrated England, especially as they felt it was unfair that the United States benefited from the review process regarding Folarin Balogun's ban. However, according to Clattenburg, the addition of one game for Quansah is consistent with how FIFA has operated in the past. "This is a big question because what we are seeing at this World Cup is something that has never happened before, especially with Flo Balogun's one-match ban," explained Clattenburg. "In the past, these types of challenges automatically got two games: one automatic and one because of the nature of the challenge. We've seen it before in this tournament where a Qatari player broke a Canadian player's leg and he got a five-game ban. So they saw the challenge, they saw the impact, and made a decision. And I believe two games is fair and consistent. Take out the Flo Balogun situation, that's consistent with any other tournament.", --- ## Related Articles 1.
