World Cup Weather: No Storms Expected on Day 16, But Chance of Rain for Egypt vs Iran Match
June 28, 2026 · Global
The World Cup is expected to be hot and sometimes stormy, with the possibility of bad weather affecting matches. Daily forecasts are provided to understand the impact of weather on matches.
This World Cup is expected to take place in hot and sometimes stormy temperatures, with most of the 104 matches scheduled to take place above 32°C. Spread across the United States, Canada and Mexico, this will likely be the hottest edition since the last time the tournament was held in North America, when the US hosted in 1994. While the extreme heat and humidity will affect how the games are played, thunderstorms could present an even greater logistical challenge. Under the thunderstorm protocol in force in the US, a match must be stopped if lightning or an electrical discharge is detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium involved. After that, a 30-minute countdown timer starts, but will be reset if another strike is detected before the time runs out. On 22 June, the match between France and Iraq became the first World Cup match to be postponed due to a storm, stalling for more than two hours. To help understand which games will be most affected, we teamed up with Aaron Mentkowski, chief meteorologist at Buffalo's WKBW-TV, to provide a daily forecast. Aaron will join the live broadcast to explain what happened during the storm delay.
