Several Pubs in Hereford Ready to Open for World Cup Match Between England and Mexico
July 6, 2026 · Global
Some pubs in Hereford are preparing to open their doors for the World Cup match between England and Mexico, while others are choosing to remain closed due to noise concerns.
A number of pubs in Hereford are planning to open in the early hours of the World Cup match between England and Mexico. Eight pubs in Herefordshire, including seven in Hereford, have submitted a Temporary Event Application (TEN) to Herefordshire Council, which granted one-off approval for the event before the match. However, the council stated that they had refunded money to pubs after the government relaxed the law, allowing pubs in England and Wales to stay open until 05:00 BST on Monday, so that fans could watch the match starting at 01:00 BST.
Billy Harrison, manager of The Kerry in Commercial Square, expressed his hope for a good crowd, despite the odd hour. However, some pubs which initially applied for permits, did not expect to open. Customers are advised to check first which venues will be open before watching the round of 16 match taking place at Mexico City Stadium.

Harrison added: "This is the World Cup. It only happens once every four years, people are so enthusiastic." Daniel from Doyles Sports Bar, one of eight pubs who initially applied for a permit which was later returned by the council, stated: "It's an England knockout game, so we're hoping there will be lots of people coming. We've had events like boxing at odd hours before."
However, staff at The Wellington on Widemarsh Street and the Rose & Crown on Ledbury Road said they no longer expected to be open for the match. Elsewhere, The Grandstand on Grandstand Road, The Yard on Aubery Street and the newly opened Queens Arms on High Street, Bromyard, said online that they would remain open for the match. Several other pubs in the West Midlands also announced on social media that they had decided not to open for this early morning match. The New Inn, which is in a residential area of Harborne, Birmingham, said they would not open as a courtesy to their neighbours. "We appreciate your understanding and support as we continue to strive to be considerate of those living nearby," they said, adding that they would be available for "football chat" from 16:00 BST on Monday. National chain Wetherspoons has confirmed that only five of its more than 800 pubs will be open for the match. The chain, which does not usually show sporting events at its venues, said only the Solomon Cutler in Broad Street, Birmingham, one pub in central London and three others in the north east of England would remain open. However, many pubs will take advantage of Sir Keir Starmer's relaxation of the rules.
